China's growth in merchandise exports of 28% in 2005 to $762.3 billion may be understated, while import growth of nearly 18% to $660.2 billion may be overstated. Chinese trade statistics differ significantly from what other countries document.
The United States reports merchandise import purchases from China of $243.5 billion, but China posts merchandise exports to the United States of $162.9 billion. Similarly, Chinese imports from the United States exceed what the United States reports as export sales to China by $6.8 billion.
