Apr. 13--In principle, there is nothing wrong with the White House search for a "war czar" to oversee the conduct of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan -- someone with the authority to issue directions to the Pentagon, the State Department and other agencies that play a significant part in each conflict.

In practice, the search is turning into another self-inflicted wound by the gang that can't seem to shoot straight, starting with the news leak Tuesday that five retired generals had declined the job and the media's predictable use of the term "czar" for the new post.
