The Island with a Cloud
One day a cloud appeared
among the islands. It chose one,
and stayed. The island
was neither pretty nor large
(well, I mean exceptional,
for all these islands
are beautiful, their shapes
are comely). It had neither
philosopher nor strong man,
and its women were beautiful
only as all women are. Its goats
gave no more milk, nor ran
more freely, and the stars
above it were exactly the same
as elsewhere. Yet the cloud
chose it and no other.
You must know our islands,
In these latitudes blue
is the only color except
for what the sun grants us
on its way to the underworld,
