Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have developed a chemical agent sensor that needs only a thimble-sized sample to detect and recognize a gas in 45 seconds, according to a PNNL research scientist.

The technique, called Quartz Laser Photo-Acoustic Sensing (QPAS), recently wrapped up the second phase of a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) effort to find a sensor that could meet the military's Joint Chemical Agent Detector (JCAD) requirements, Michael Wojcik told Defense Daily in a recent interview.
