It appears that not everyone travelling through the Channel tunnel on sleek Eurostar trains between London and Paris or Brussels is sitting back to enjoy the experience. Some are spies, counting heads. Those who are watching out in a way that would cause Hercule Poirot's little grey cells to darken suspiciously include British Airways (BA) and Air France; and the four consortia bidding to build a high-speed rail link on the English side. Meanwhile, there are already the sounds of a row breaking out between two of Eurostar's state-owned parents, Britain's European Passenger Services (EPS) and France's SNCF.
