S. BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Bob Rief loves his beat-up, gray Land Rover. It gets him around this Vermont ski town, home base of Merrell, even when the weather folks feel the need to talk about wind chill factors, even in the snow and the ice. Rief would agree you may get a bumpy ride on that Land Rover, but it does have a certain rugged charm, and hey, it gets you there.
Besides, all things considered, the Land Rover seems a suitable mode of transportation to the headquarters of Merrell, a company that can trace its roots to, as Rief put it, "the back country U.S.A.," where the need for durable, comfortable, well-fitting hiking shoes takes precedence over fashion.
