BOSTON - The conditions weren't ideal, but Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot was at his best when it mattered most.
An unforgiving headwind turned the 111th Boston Marathon into a relative jog from the start in Newton, past the Wellesley women and into the hills of Newton. A pack of about a dozen world-class runners were positioned to steal a win on this damp, gray morning.
"Nobody went to pull ahead, and nobody wanted to remain behind," Cheruiyot said. "I think with 5K (3.1 miles) left, that is where the marathon really started."
