DeWitt officials are considering a local law that could help preserve some of the town's historical assets.
A sample ordinance, developed by town historian Frank Volcko and the DeWitt Preservation and Historical Society, would establish a policy to protect historic landmarks and establish historic districts.
The program would be administered by a commission that would identify the landmarks.
Volcko presented a sample ordinance April 9 at the town board meeting. He noted the Erie Canal aqueduct, cemeteries and rail properties might be among those considered as landmarks.
