For much of its history, painting was concerned with the space "behind" the canvas. Then, at the hands of midcentury formalists, the surface of the canvas--the picture plane--became the center of interest. With admirable logic, some artists--most noticeably Frank Stella--took the next step of exploring the space in front of the painting by making works with projecting relief elements. In Tra gli echi (Among the Echoes), the title piece of his recent show, Marco Gastini takes this process still further.
