WHEN her reign as a beauty queen began, Gertrude Naysmith was a 15- year- old schoolgirl who had charmed the judges with her dancing.

Having been crowned, she looked forward to her yearlong reign as Miss Peeblesshire.

But now, 54 years on, Mrs Naysmith is Scotland's longest-reigning beauty queen.

The great-grandmother was never replaced because the organisers withdrew the competition the following year.

The 70-year-old, of Innerleithen, said: 'I have been a beauty queen for more than 50 years and I guess I will be for years to come.
