Apr. 20--Berks County beekeepers have not been impacted by the dreaded colony collapse disorder that has destroyed thousands of honeybee hives in Pennsylvania and across the nation.
But those who raise the bees locally -- and the Berks farms that rely on them for pollination -- fear the bee-killing phenomenon is unavoidable.
"We consider bees our best friends, so it's a big concern," said Henry Frecon, president and general manager of Frecon Fruit Farms in Colebrookdale Township.
Each year Frecon, like many local farmers, rents colonies from beekeepers, who are also known as apiarists.
