This spring in Boston's grittiest neigborhoods, as teens finally shed bulky jackets and slip on T-shirts, many will still don one grim year-round fashion accessory: memorial buttons featuring the faces of victims of street violence.
"To me, you see it as that person is always with you," said 17-year-old Shaniqua Young of Roxbury. "You never forget that person."
"A lot of the kids in my school wear them, and no matter what neighborhood you're in, you'll see people wearing them," said 17-year-old Shanika Riddock of Roxbury.
