Apr. 23--Don Surath is a good son. When his mother developed a dowager's hump from severe osteoporosis, he joined the board of Oakland's Foundation for Osteoporosis Research and Education, figuring he'd get involved and learn more about bone disease.
Little did he know he'd need the information for himself. Two years ago, Surath, a marathon runner in his 50s, fell on his back while ice-skating. A bone density test revealed that Surath, too, suffers from osteoporosis, a bone disease resulting in low bone mass and susceptibility to fracture.
"That fall was a real blessing," says Surath, of Marin. "If it hadn't happened, ...
