WASHINGTON, Apr. 23, 2007 (IPS/GIN) -- A farmer jailed for opposing Shell Oil's natural gas pipeline in Ireland and an Icelandic entrepreneur who brokered innovative fishing-rights buyouts to protect North Atlantic wild salmon have been named as two winners of the Goldman Environmental Prize this year.
A total of six individuals won the prize, which is often referred to as the "Green Nobel." Like the farmer and the entrepreneur, most of the recipients are ordinary people who made their environmental contributions with relative anonymity.
