This delightful volume delivers much more than its title promises. Rather than a prolonged discussion of the causes of the Civil War, it is a collection of essays the author wrote at various times, some of them revised for this publication. It is more about the South than it is about the Civil War, although, as the text makes clear, that is a rather tenuous distinction.
