Recommended tests for the screening of patients who are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes may prove onerous for primary care providers.
The new American Diabetes Association consensus statement specifies that screening for so-called prediabetes should involve the fasting plasma glucose test and the 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test and should be undertaken in the same population that is currently screened for diabetes. Both tests must be done, on separate days, in order to confirm both impaired "fasting glucose (IFG) and/or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT).
