Rus--and rug merchants--have been around for thousands of years, but it's only in the past decade that area rugs have become one of the hottest growth categories in home furnishings. It's a phenomenon caused by several dynamic factors. Consumers are tired of the sameness of wall-to-wall carpeting. More homes are being built with permanent floors of wood, ceramic, tile and even marble. These hard-surface materials are a perfect foil for area rugs.
