Apr. 25--Despite pleas from San Jose Flea Market vendors who packed council chambers Tuesday night, the San Jose City Council voted to approve a revised plan for a major housing and commercial development on the flea market property. "I love the flea market," said Mayor Chuck Reed, "but the decision on whether to have a flea market on that site belongs to the owners of the property, not to the city." At the close of a lengthy nighttime hearing, several council members praised the flea market as a multi-cultural institution that provides a livelihood for hundreds of vendors and their families.
