Diabetes is a deficiency or absence of the hormone insulin, which is the main hormone responsible for the control of sugar in the blood. According to the National Health Interview Survey, (1) conducted by the Center for Health Statistics at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in 2005, nearly 20.8 million adults and children in the United States, or about seven percent of the population, suffered from diabetes.
