On January 5, 2001, the Rio Hondo Roadrunners and the Citrus Community College Owls played a preseason baseball game. During the game, Rio Hondo's pitcher hit a Citrus College batter. In the ensuing inning, the Citrus College pitcher hit Avila, a Rio Hondo batter, in the head with an alleged retaliatory pitch, cracking his helmet. The pitch staggered Avila at the plate, where he immediately felt pain and dizziness.
