JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Apr. 26, 2007 (IPS/GIN) -- Debates about South Africa's trade agreements are heating up, following the country's inclusion last month in economic negotiations already underway between the European Union countries from Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific.

Prior to last month, South Africa only had observer status in the negotiations. It has been speculated that South Africa insisted on joining the talks to try and reap benefits in the form of access to EU markets while also gaining protection for its domestic products.
