A federal judge Wednesday certified for class action a strip- search lawsuit against the Cook County jail, making it possibly the largest such suit against a jail in the nation, a lawyer for the plaintiffs said.
At least 250,000 people are covered by the lawsuit, known as Young v. Sheahan, which makes two chief allegations against Cook County jail. First, it alleges that men have been treated differently than women and strip-searched in plain view of one another in cattle-call fashion, while women are given privacy screens. In addition, body cavity searches have been done differently for men than women.
