Apr. 27--PANAMA CITY -- Chris Geertz tried scuba diving in college and got the bends, the painful formation of nitrogen bubbles in the blood, after rising too quickly in the water. He was treated in a hyperbaric chamber, an experience that influenced a career.
Geertz went on to medical school and in 2003 became Bay County's only physician certified in emergency and hyperbaric medicine. He heads the hyperbaric medicine department at Bay Medical Center, which has a 31-foot-long, 6-foot-wide chamber that seats up to seven patients, including a "tender," a nurse or paramedic who monitors the treatment.
