Apr. 27--The Eli Whitney Fire Department's insurance rating has improved, and that means cheaper homeowner's insurance for the area.
Eli Whitney's rating went from class 7 to 6. The state Department of Insurance and Office of the State Fire Marshal rates fire departments from 10, not certified, to 1, the highest level of certification. The inspection was in November, and the station got word of the change this week.
This is the first time in 12 years that the Eli Whitney station has had a review.
Assistant Chief Ashley Walker said the rating will reduce homeowner's insurance by an average of $100 a year.
