May 1--In an age when most music is composed at computers, Augusta Reed Thomas still stands at a drafting table and puts pen to lined paper.
"I am very much a handmade person," says the 42-year-old American composer, one of the more prominent on today's classical scene. (She was one of two finalists for this year's Pulitzer Prize in music, which ultimately went to a jazz musician she greatly admires, Fort Worth-born Ornette Coleman.) "Every sound is caressed and touched, literally, with my pen.
"And when I compose, I actually sing the music."
