May 1--DES MOINES -- Track and field never has and probably never will penetrate the nation's consciousness.
Sure, we'll pay attention every four years, during the Summer Olympics. Even then, only a precious few become household names. Other than that, we'd rather spend our time on our fantasy baseball teams, or trying to pick the correct 12 seed to win in the NCAA basketball tournament or projecting which 18-year-old recruit will become an All-Big 12 performer in three years.
