It's funny how your progression in owning boats mirrors your life. My photography career started at California's Doheny Beach, where at 13 I was taking shots of surfers on 2-foot waves and using my mom's inflatable to fish in the adjacent harbor. Now I depart from Dana Point Harbor (right next to Doheny) to bypass those 2-footers and head 105 miles offshore to photograph the world's biggest waves at Cortes Bank, an underwater ridge that catches open ocean swells before they begin to drag and lose steam in shallow coastal waters. Bigger waves, bigger distances, bigger boats. Very nice.
