A strong physical presence, more than a style, was characteristic of Australian Ballet in the two programs it presented at the Kennedy Center--the nineteenth-century Russian Don Quixote and a triple-header of recent Australian choreography. This is a company of bodies that move briskly and at utmost energy. Efficiency is paramount, with no one preening or being reticent. Placement is rather British (that is, English Cecchetti), while the company's sense of dynamics is not unlike the simple, direct sort that typified American dancers in the 1940s. There's strong teamwork within which individual dancers can make a mark, though there are no stars right now.
