Topping the list of enhancements that PCMCIA's new specification--PC Card--offers is support for 3.3-volt technology. Vendors can now build PC Card devices and host platforms with PC Card slots that sense operating voltage levels at runtime.
The 3.3-volt technology dramatically reduces power consumption of the devices, providing greatly extended battery life for mobile platforms. PC Card devices may also include a power-management feature that detects a "suspend" state of the host computer so they can place themselves in suspension for even better battery life.
