May 2--Former NASA astronaut Lisa Nowak excelled at her job, but was described by some fellow astronauts as "prickly," "contentious" and "not a team player" -- an assessment that apparently ruined a recent chance for her to return to space.

None was aware of her affair with space-shuttle pilot Bill Oefelein, but many described the two as "good friends," and rumors were circulating that the two had an intimate relationship.

At one point, Nowak and Oefelein took a T-38 supersonic training jet to Key West together. They also called each other more than 100 times on cell phones Oefelein provided.
