May 2--Less than a year after losing out on a bid for the University of Tennessee Athletic Department's media contract, Action Sports Media is moving beyond its core collegiate media-rights business and carving out a stronger presence locally.
Last October, the Alcoa sports marketing firm acquired majority ownership of the Big Orange Army, a military-themed Vols fan club. In February, the company bought a 50 percent stake in two sports talk radio stations, WVLZ 1180 AM in Knoxville and WKCE 1120 AM in Maryville.
