May 3--Warren Zevon was no dummy.

He knew when he was diagnosed in 2002 with terminal lung cancer that publicity over his illness would boost his career, and accordingly, one of the first things he did was to direct his record company to announce the news.

It may have been the savviest career move Zevon ever made -- despite his mordant wit and incredibly literate lyrics, he was notorious for subverting his own success with booze, drugs and by an almost pathological ability to alienate the people trying to help him.
