May 3--WINSTON-SALEM -- Gerald Freedman can't explain it.

One minute, he's fine. He's working with students at North Carolina School of the Arts, preparing them for the school's latest production.

The next minute, he said he's sobbing.

"What's this all about?" Freedman says.

It's hard to blame the award-winning producer and educator for becoming emotional these days. The months of planning and weeks of rehearsing for tonight's premiere of "West Side Story" have brought back a flood of memories.
