May 3--Sandy, a mare the color of fresh snow, arrived ill-fed and neglected with three stablemates at The Horse Shelter after they were rescued from Lamy. But Sandy's foal, born shortly after they were rescued, lived only a day.
Another mare, Dulce, rescued near her namesake village in Northern New Mexico, arrived at the shelter with hooves so painfully overgrown they curved up toward her knees.
Milagra, a golden Palomino, was rescued from a Santa Fe backyard so malnourished that she almost died.
Her stablemates had to be euthanized.
