May 4--It's hard to imagine three more different pieces than those on offer this week from the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The guest conductor is Sir Andrew Davis, music director of Lyric Opera of Chicago and artistic adviser of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
The program opens with a brand-new work, commissioned by the DSO, from American composer August Read Thomas. Titled Helios Choros I (Sun God Dancers), the 10-minute piece is nominally inspired by the song-and-dance choruses of ancient Greek dramas.
