THE SNP and Liberal Democrats were on the verge of a deal last night that would allow Alex Salmond to become Scotland's new First Minister.
With just one seat separating the SNP and Labour, the Nats were locked in talks aimed at forging the coalition needed to secure power.
But any agreement with powerbrokers the Lib Dems will hinge on the Nats dropping their pledge to hold a Scottish referendum on independence in 2010.
