Wolves once lived in all of Michigan's 83 counties. But the belief that wolves were dangerous and unable to live with humans virtually eliminated the gray wolf from Michigan.
One year after Michigan became a state in 1837 it adopted a wolf bounty. Within a few years, wolves disappeared from the southern Lower Peninsula. By 1935 wolves no longer lived anywhere in the Lower Peninsula. Although the wolf bounty was stopped in 1960, the gray wolf had become almost extinct in the Upper Peninsula (U.P.). By 1973, it was estimated that only 6 wolves lived in the U.P.
In that same year, the Michigan gray wolf was placed on the Endangered Species List.
