May 8--The Palm Beach County Cultural Council gave $3.8 million in cultural grants to 77 arts organizations for the 2007-08 season, but the Palm Beach Opera is not one of them.
Opera officials were stunned recently when the Cultural Council denied its request for a $250,000 marketing grant. The council receives funds from county bed-tax money, which at $3.8 million, was slightly lower this year.
Major grants went to the Norton Museum of Art ($235,392), the Palm Beach Zoo at Dreher Park ($208,205) and the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts ($232,425).
In the past the opera has received as much as $152,000.
