Welcome to the mid-1990s, gentle readers, the epoch of small self indulgences! Reversing longstanding U.S. trends, 1993 witnessed an increase in smoking and alcohol consumption. Recreational drug use in the professional/managerial class came out of the closet for the first time in years. Chocolate consumption soared. Americans gained something like 194 million pounds last year (evenly distributed among the population, one hopes).
