ONCE they were sworn enemies who shared only a mutual loathing - and a refusal to compromise that stoked Northern Ireland's sectarian hatred to boiling point.
But yesterday Democratic Unionist leader the Rev Ian Paisley and former IRA chief Martin McGuinness stood laughing side by side and pledged to usher in an new era of peace by working together to govern for the benefit of all.
