May 8--VIRGINIA BEACH -- State police discovered 14 illegal immigrants in the back of a van licensed to a Verizon contractor during a routine traffic stop in Virginia Beach on Monday.
Mike Netherland, assistant special agent-in-charge for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in Norfolk, said the illegal immigrants were all adult males, 12 from Mexico and two from El Salvador. They were riding in the back of a van owned by Ivy H. Smith Co., which does contract work for Verizon.
Netherland said ICE has begun "actively investigating the employer" but said he could not comment further on that matter. A ...
