Citing problems with data tabulation, the U.S. Census Bureau in March decreased its estimates of Americans who lacked health insurance in 2005.

The bureau announced that 44.8 million people were uninsured in 2005, or about 15.3 percent of the U.S. population. The original 2005 estimate, released in August 2006, found that 46.6 million people were uninsured, or 15.9 percent of the population. The revision means that 1.8 million more people had insurance in 2005 than previously estimated.
