This biography appears at a time of almost unprecedented scholarly interest in the writing of D.H. Lawrence. The publication 10 years ago of ``Mr. Noon,'' Lawrence's long-lost novel, aroused attention, as has the recent appearance of the unexpurgated version of ``Sons and Lovers.''
Lawrence's most recent biographer, Brenda Maddox, claims that the release of the last volume of his collected letters also is a milestone: ``The result is the most vivid and engaging self-portrait left by any English writer since Keats.''
