Article: Access key to reducing prostate cancer mortality.(cancer risk in black men)(Brief article)

Reducing the rates of prostate cancer in black men may depend more on the patient's access to routine health care than his knowledge about the disease, according to a study in the March 12 online issue of Cancer.

Black men are more likely than white men to get prostate cancer, and their mortality rate from the disease is 68.1 deaths per 100,000 men compared with 27.7 per 100,000 for white men, according to the American Cancer Society. While there is no single reason for the disparity, some researchers have suggested that a lack of knowledge about prostate cancer and preventive care leads to less screening, delayed diagnosis and advanced disease.
