In April, Cuban exile sports agent Gustavo "Gus" Dominguez was convicted of nearly two dozen charges at a federal court in Key West, Fla., for his role in smuggling then-unknown baseball players out of Cuba and harboring them once in the United States.
Prosecution witnesses, including an admitted drug felon, testified that Dominguez financed a 2004 smuggling operation that brought five defecting Cuban baseball players to the Florida Keys. Two of them are currently playing minor league baseball for the Atlanta Braves and Arizona Diamondbacks, while the other three are no longer playing baseball.
