Ethical misconduct is frequently so insidious that it escapes notice until the damage is done, according to recent research by Francesca Gino and Max Bazerman. Gino, a post-doctoral fellow in organizational behavior at Carnegie Mellon Tepper School of Business, says such behavior is more often the result of the "boiling frog syndrome" than of deliberate intent to defraud. (An old folk tale tells the story of a frog that hops out immediately when thrown into boiling water. However, when placed in a pot of cold water that is then heated gradually, the frog fails to notice the rising temperature and eventually cooks to death.)
