Even as thoroughbred horse racing industry leaders push for a national racing channel over cable, a few individual tracks are taking modest steps toward in-home wagering in ways that could create new revenue streams for cable operators even before interactivity takes hold.
In New York, Cablevision Systems Corp. is spearheading talks aimed at starting a 90-day trial of presenting live video feeds of full racing cards in its systems' homes in Long Island and parts of New York City this winter. Those talks will likely lead to testing the creation of a basic channel in some downstate cable systems.
