For Americans who have followed the four decades of troubles in Northern Ireland, the notion that the bitter factions could come together in a power-sharing government has often seemed to be an incredible and unattainable dream.
Yet, there on the podium in Belfast together were Ian Paisley, the ultimate Protestant hard-liner, and Marlin McGuinness, an erstwhile commander of the outlawed paramilitary Irish Republican Army, smiling broadly for the news cameras.
