AOL rarely is thought of when it comes to Internet access these days, but it is only in recent months that it dropped from being the world's largest provider of Internet access. Most of the Internet access it provides is, of course, dial-up, not the broadband that has revolutionized the use of the Net.
Seeing somewhat belatedly that AOL did not have a broadband opportunity, much less a broadband strategy, media giant Time Warner is turning AOL into an advertising-supported media company that uses the Net to deliver goods and services. All the goodies that AOL used to make available only to its customers are now free to any Net user.
