Strategic planning requires that hospitals be able to project service volumes with a reasonable degree of accuracy--a challenging task, at best. Historically, these projections have been based almost entirely on patient service area demographics, and then modified for market share.
Yet recent data suggest that technology adoption rates can have a significant impact on growth in both inpatient and outpatient service lines. Indeed, it is possible that more reliable projections could be made by factoring this important intervening variable into the analysis.
